There are so many online colleges accepting students from all over the world right now that choosing the best online college to enroll in has become quite a daunting task. When choosing an online college to attend you should consider several important factors.
• Programs available. Make sure that the online college you are considering has a good program for your specific field of interest. Do not compromise your field of interest and go to a college with a mediocre program simply because it has a better overall reputation, is cheaper, or because it is the first one to accept you. Make the program your first priority.
• Accreditation. Make sure that the online college is accredited. It doesn’t matter if the accreditation is national or regional as long as the accreditation will be recognized wherever you are. This will also protect you from scams.
• Reputation. Make sure that the online college has a good reputation. Read online reviews and contact students and alumni for their feedback. It doesn’t matter what the online college offers in paper (or in this case in webpage?) if they don’t live up to the hype they create. You can be sure that a lot of online colleges promise more than they can deliver; after all it is their way of attracting students.
• Requirements. Make sure you are clear regarding all the admission requirements so that you won’t end up wasting money paying non-refundable application fees when you might not be eligible after all. Find out all the technical requirements as well to make sure that your equipment (computer and internet connection) is not below standards. You might find that you have to upgrade your equipment if your computer is too old or you’ll have a hard time navigating the online environment.
• Cost. Make sure that you are aware of ALL the fees you will need to pay during the course of your studies. This includes admission fees, course fees, additional fees for materials, and miscellaneous. Tuition fee usually increases each year or every other year so make allowances for the increase in your budget.
When planning to take an online college course you need to make some preparations to ensure that you finish your studies successfully. It wouldn’t do to start your studies and quit after sometime because that will be a waste of time. Even if you don’t quit by coming in unprepared you are setting yourself up for hardship when it could have been avoided in the first place.
One of the things you need to prepare for is your academics. Sure you finished high school and passed all the necessary tests but have you considered how long that has been? This is especially important for students who have been long out of school and might be feeling a little rusty. Before “school†starts it is a good idea to do a little advance reading. You don’t have to learn everything or finish an entire book but if you know the courses that you’ll be taking it’s a good idea to have a background so you can know what to expect. This is also very important if you’ll be taking math subjects and haven’t practiced for such a long time. Ask someone’s help to brush up your math concepts because it can be quite a task trying to learn the more advanced math concepts if you have forgotten the basic ones.
Preparing for your academics is also a good idea because it will not only get your mind ready but it will also get you back into the habit of studying. You might think that redeveloping your study habits will be a breeze but just ask the many online students who once found themselves falling asleep in front of their study materials even with tones of hot coffee and you’ll understand why this is one of the things that can be a major problem. By studying in advance you can assess you study habits early on and start adjusting so that by the time your online course starts you won’t be having any major problems anymore.
Ideally this kind of preparation should be started several months before your online course starts. But if it’s going to start next week then a week of preparation is better than nothing.

Online college education is a special form of distance education. Distance education has been around for quite sometime now. The concept is simply that students do their studying or learning away from their professors and other classmates using the materials that were sent to them and corresponding via mail. Online education is just the same except that instead of using purely paper-based materials and corresponding through letters the computer and the internet is now used. In tandem the two are used to download most of the course materials, which can be read online or printed out depending on the student’s preference, upload and submit assignments, research for any additional information needed, and communicate with one another via email, chat, or forum discussions.
To be a successful online college student one has to be a little internet savvy. You might wonder why this is even mentioned at all since almost everybody knows how to use the computer nowadays. But the truth is that many would-be students are actually turned off because they fear that they might not have the required skills to be an online student.
Learning computer and internet skills need to be hard and scary. In fact all you need to know are a few basics, which can be taught to you by almost any teenager you grab on the streets. Below are the usual skills you need to learn:
• Basic computer operation – On/Off, Opening Files, Saving Files, Typing
• Basic Internet Skills – Uploading Files, Downloading Files, Using you e-mail, Chatting, Forum Posting
• Basic Internet Research Skills – Searching using Google or Yahoo (or whatever your preferred search engine is), Saving/Bookmarking Web pages, Citing Web pages as reference
That’s it.
In case your online college has a special online environment they use. Make sure you also get oriented with that online environment. Again if you are not confident with your skills ask someone to show you how to move around the online environment. There’s no real special computer or internet skills required to navigate online classrooms since the usual features are simply the basics too like a download and upload sections (for getting course materials and submitting assignments), an announcement section, a forums section, and all the other things that you’ve prepared for already.
